Mayhem comes to wku

Revolution 91.7, Bowling Green’s student-run alternative station, held their 20th annual Mayhem festival on Western Kentucky University’s campus on Friday.

“It’s been a real journey getting here, but it’s happening,” said Station Manager Austin Preston.

“The most difficult part of putting together this festival has just been waiting for it,” said Noah Dentinger, the Program Director of the station. “We’ve been planning this since December and we’ve just been anxious for everyone to come experience it.”

Supervisor of the radio station, Alana Watson said “We wanted this festival to be a campus and community event that people look forward to every year. The hope is that every year we will build on the foundation that this year’s Mayhem sets.”

Food trucks were available for attendees of the concert which included A Taste of Europe serving Mediterranean food and Rita’s Italian Ice & Frozen Custard.

Nashville artist Lilly Winwood began the concert on Friday evening after the release of her latest album, “Talking Walls.” Self-described as “mixing salt-of-the-earth songwriting with a graceful splash of old-world sophistication.”

Following winwood was Louisville band, The Anchorites. The band featured some WKU students, John Sutphin, their lead singer and Lèa Schenk, a featured singer.

After a short break, local band Astronomy Club performed. They played new cuts from the album that they’ve been in the process of recording.

The Daddy Sisters band went on next to take the stage where they announced their latest album coming out, “The Beast With Two Backs” that they’ve been recording.

“Performing and recording can be simultaneously one of the most rewarding and stressful experiences at the same time,” Jack Quinn, drummer of The Daddy Sisters said. “There’s something very special about being able to just be a musician for a few days, but at the same time, it’s a lot of pressure to play your absolute best.”

After The Daddy Sisters performed, the headliner, Post Animal played. From Chicago, they came to Bowling Green as part of their Beautiful Places Tour.

“It’s been hard work to put this together but I’m glad that it’s how I get to end my time at WKU,” Preston said.

Mayhem also hosted an afterparty at Donna’s Bar featuring Cincinnati band, Lung and and Louisville band Anemic Royalty.

Watson said that prep for Mayhem 2024 will already be starting soon to celebrate the 21st annual festival around springtime.
